Although the use of digital cameras for underwater photography is relatively easy, there are significant differences between what it takes to shoot underwater rather than on earth. Most notable is the illumination compensation necessary in the ocean depths. The deeper the depth more than is necessary to compensate the diminished light. Artificial lighting and manuals elements clear white balance of a digital camera provide the solution. All colors observed on land are clearly defined by where they fall in reference to the primary colors. The properties of the natural underwater light are quite different. Color frequencies are so widespread that all that remains is blue. This serves to explain why water appears bluish when looking at the sky while submerged beneath the ocean. As a result the balance of a camera automatic white can not provide the required accuracy. Non-white objects can be perceived as white and corrected improperly.

Bluish and very little color are common when using many conventional cameras for underwater photography. Using manual settings for white balance on a digital camera can help overcome these inaccuracies lighting. The configuration used will depend on the clarity of the water. The basic guideline that can be used: The Daylight mode for depths up to 10 meters or flash assisted macro shots, set to cloudy depths or when the flash assisted macro mode produces overwhelming bluish tones. This will help bring the colors more vibrant and less blue.

Sometimes you will see a visible mist across the entire image. This is the light reflected by sand particles and plankton, which can be corrected using an external flash or video light instead of a built in flash. The only exception is close-up macro shots, where the camera is very close to the object that attempt to capture.

The use of zoom settings is also significantly different in underwater photography. Adjustments must be made to compensate for the refraction of light at the air-water found in the lens. This concept can easily be demonstrated by placing an object halfway for a glass of water and watching the distorted appearance of the submerged portion of the object. If using the zoom setting even on land, under water, a narrow field result to compensate adequately.

Olympus is a good brand

It's hard to take pics underwater with a handheld digital camera. It's a little hard to see what you're pointing at on the screen underwater, especially when using a waterproof casing on a non-waterproof camera. If you do get a waterproof camera or casing and take it into salt water make sure you rinse it off well with freshwater after every use so it doesn't get corroded by the salt water. Without a good flash pictures too far down from the surface will only be so-so in quality.

I'm a little skeptical on what I should get. Whenever I plan on buying a digital camera all I look for is reviews reviews reviews.

Any suggestions on what I should get? I was thinking on the Olympus Stylus 1 …s durable, but then again I'm skeptical.

Btw I'm going to be using this camera for underwater picture taking only, I already have an SLR and a normal point and shoot for regular shots.

    Thanks :]

    • Ah, best P&S underwater camera ... yes the Olympus is one of the better P&S underwater camera.

Scientists use underwater housing that can cost nearly double the cost of the camera inside ... usually a nice $2,000 to $10,000 camera.
